Uttarakhand Seva Nidhi Paryavaran Shiksha Sansthan (USNPSS), Almora, works for women’s development and children’s education in the Uttarakhand Himalaya. The aim is to create situations for people to learn and transform themselves and their communities, especially in matters of gender and caste inequality, environment and development. The Trust has supported USNPSS’s initiatives on water harvesting, crop improvement, afforestation and the implementation of new techniques for farming. With women organised into village-based groups through planned activities, the Uttarakhand Mahila Parishad (Uttarakhand Women’s Federation), a dynamic network, extends across the remote mountain villages. Regular meetings are held both in villages and at the USNPSS training centre to discuss and solve problems. Annual congregations of women are also held at different locations in Kumaon and Garhwal to share experiences and strengthen their sense of solidarity. Village learning centres offer libraries as well as sports and educational materials to children of 6–14 years, aiming to bolster their learning experience in the evening hours.
Associated with the Dayal Trust since 2003.
